LynnMall Shopping Centre

PROJECT: LYNNMALL SHOPPING CENTRE, KIWI PROPERTY AND RED BADGE
INDUSTRY: RETAIL
LOCATION: AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND

The Client

LynnMall is New Zealand’s first shopping centre, opening its doors in 1963 and has remained a retail staple for Auckland’s western suburbs for over 50 years. With over 130 retailers, Kiwi Property has continued to develop LynnMall with the expansion of new retailers, entertainment and dining.

Red Badge is contracted to manage the security of the LynnMall Shopping Centre. Founded in 1997, Red Badge provides Security Guarding Services, Event Security Services and Event Staffing Services, offering a world-class service at a local level throughout New Zealand.

The Challenge

On Friday 3rd September 2021, eight people were injured in a terrorist attack at Countdown, LynnMall. Following the attack, Red Badge and Kiwi Property identified a requirement for increased training for security guards and better equipment to protect staff and customers, including Body Worn Cameras.

To increase safety for staff and customers, and capture evidence-grade video footage of any incident, Red Badge and Kiwi Property worked with CSE Genesis for a solution to equip workers with Body Worn Cameras and connect the cameras with communication devices.

The Solution

CSE Genesis addressed the challenges by providing the Motorola VB400 Body Worn Camera suitable for mobile video security applications. As the Motorola VB400 is a sophisticated solution with an array of features, the most notable was the pre-record feature which allowed the security team to understand the lead-up to incidents.

Red Badge also noted the high-quality video and audio recording, enabling the guards to clearly capture the details of each incident, including the offender’s face, voice and registration, even at night or in low-light and high-traffic areas.

Red Badge sourced a cloud-based system that was customised to their parameters and connected with a 4G Wi-Fi Router from CSE Genesis for increased cyber security. The software allowed for multiple users with varying access levels, tagged and categorised events, and configured a time on how long to retain the footage.

The rugged build, compact size, connectivity to other Motorola VB400 devices and ability to connect with radios and GPS were added to the list of benefits the Body Worn Camera solution provided.

To ensure the customer and its teams were supported and safe, CSE Genesis provided ongoing technical support and both in-store and online training.

Throughout the trial rollout, Red Badge received positive feedback from all their guards, who were eager to get involved and use the cameras themselves. The guards utilised the cameras effectively for safety purposes and incident recording but also activated the cameras while completing a patrol or investigation.

The Body Worn Camera trial was highly successful with guards, retailers and customers feeling safer, reduced aggression and increased compliance. As a result, Kiwi Property has now rolled the solution out to all six of its shopping malls throughout New Zealand.
