UCI 2022 Road World Championships

PROJECT: UCI 2022 ROAD WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
INDUSTRY: EVENTS
LOCATION: WOLLONGONG, NEW SOUTH WALES

The Client

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) is a world governing body of cycling that coordinates large scale cycling events across the globe. This year, their annual Australian Road World Championships was held in Wollongong, NSW. The event required extensive support to coordinate and broadcast to an international audience, and thus communications played an important role.

The Challenge

The overarching challenge with this project lay in the complexities that come with providing wide area coverage to a rolling race. It was apparent that no static radio infrastructure could deliver on the coverage requirements, so the deployment of a comprehensive communications solution was necessary.

Race directors and officials, as well as race team support staff needed continuous and simultaneous communications coverage across the race and its multiple venues. In addition to this, on the ground technical support was critical to the coordination of the race.

CSE Crosscom partnered with UCI to determine a solution that delivered on these needs, to facilitate a seamless event for all participating.

The Solution

The South Australian CSE Crosscom team spearheaded the execution of the communications solution at the rolling event, leveraging the experience that they gained from managing the similar communication needs of the ‘Tour Down Under’ in Adelaide.

To meet the event’s scale requirements, CSE Crosscom implemented a complete DMR & WAVE PTT solution. DMR communications infrastructure is deployed in a unique way to support the rolling race coverage needs. The team oversaw the installation of over 120 radios found in vehicles and sites and managed a further 400+ radio & PTT devices as required by event personnel.

The result was comprehensive communications coverage for all event stakeholders, effectively meeting the logistical needs of the rolling race. CSE Crosscom supplemented the provision of quality communications coverage with strong technical support, which ensured a world-class solution for the UCI Wollongong event.
